Great places to stay in Eastern Europe

Great places to stay in Eastern Europe

It was time for a holiday and half the family was rooting for Africa while the other half swore by Europe. I was trying to get some information on the net about luxury Tanzania safari holidays when I found a link for Europe and decided to check that out. It took me to Croatia in Eastern Europe.

I always thought Croatia was a war torn country with bombed out buildings and an occasional sniper still around for old times'sake. My assumption couldn’t have been further from the truth!

Away from the beaten track, Croatia has a chequered history. The old town is a big draw with people gathering at the picturesque waterfront promenade to watch the sunset. It was news to me that Hitchcock famously claimed it to be the most beautiful in the world!

To add to the romantic mood, there is the famed Nikola Basic’s Sea Organ that plays when air is pushed up through pipes to an organ placed under the white flagstones. It provides a fitting soundtrack to the setting sun!

Croatia offers a vibrant nightlife. One can head towards the Zadar archipelago to enjoy the islands. Pag, Ugljan and Dugi have beautiful beaches. A lot of places in Croatia remind of one of the canals of Venice. Mljet Island is a pristine park with few residents, and just one large road! The stunning scenery and peaceful atmosphere is so seductive that it is said that Odysseus came and stayed on for seven years! Talk of taking a break!

There are budget hotels but it is best to stay in the old town to take in the flavors of this historic place. In fact, the hotels arrange excursions and that’s quite convenient. One can get to Croatia by air, road, bus or ferry. The best time to visit is spring, autumn or early summer.
